 The New Centre

So whats it all about?

It about an innovative partnership between the Diocese of Connor, E&B Services, Prime Care Ireland and the parishioners of St. Columbas, which has resulted in a pioneering new development on the Edge of Highfield and Springmartin Estates in West Belfast. St. Columbas Church, built in 1962, has been demolished and has been replaced with a sixty two bed nursing home and a new multi-purpose church building. A creative new beginning in the community...for the community.

A creative new beginning in the community .... for the community

The building of the new nursing home and centre, which took around a year,  provides a considerable number of employment opportunities in the local area.  Of course, the other benefit to the community is the facility itself. For those elderly members of our community who need a little extra care and attention in their advancing years, this new, well equipped, modern, state of the art service on their door step, will allow them to continue to live locally. Remaining an integral part of the community in a well appointed and caring environment, residents will be able to live close to their friends and relatives.

 Reconnecting.....and planning for growth

The establishment of the new multi-purpose Church Centre has been at the heart of the redevelopment. "This has been a challenging time for everyone. There has been a considerable amount of upheaval for the congregation, but we embrace the hope of a new and better future with optimism..... It is an exciting new chapter in the life of St. Columbas. At a time when many churches are in decline or even closing, we are building with growth in mind! The new centre not only continues to provide for the various organizations and ministries currently associated with St. Columbas, but it will also provide a variety of additional resources and ministries that will benefit the whole community. The new building has a large well appointed hall on the ground floor. This caters for some of the bigger events, and services held in it. Connected by a lift, upstairs there is a Cafe, various rooms and an office. It is hoped that the cafe will become a lively focal point for folk in the area to meet and have a chat over a cup of coffee or a meal.

The overall vision :

"To re-establish a church presence and outreach work in Whiterock Parish in West Belfast, particularly in the Highfield and Springmartin Housing Estates, amongst the most deprived areas in Northern Ireland. Connecting with the unchurched and building a new expression of church and establishing with a self sustaining congregation in a new community building."
